Stability Ritual Association

About the Ritual

In accordance with the Articles of the Union between the two Grand Lodges in 1813 the Lodge of Reconciliation was formed to bring some unity to the work of the Moderns and the Ancients in a way that was acceptable, and which would meet with the approval of Grand Lodge.

The Lodge of Reconciliation finished its work and closed in 1816 having presented the Working to the United Grand Lodge. Its masonic instruction had also been imparted to those who attended its meetings, or to lodges by receiving visits from its members. However, it was realised that this work of promulgating the ritual needed to continue and so the Stability Lodge of Instruction was formed by many of the very same Brethren.

Bro. Philip Broadfoot (Preceptor 1817-1835) and Bro. Peter Thomson (Preceptor 1835-1851), both Founders of the Stability Lodge of Instruction had also both been involved with the Lodge of Reconciliation. At that time, no written or printed copies of the ritual were permitted but under their guidance the Stability Lodge of Instruction continued its work to ensure that the ritual remained true.

Bro. Henry Muggeridge joined the Lodge in 1839 and became the third Preceptor, 1851-1885. He was held in high esteem and the first printed copy of the Stability Ritual in 1902 bears testament that it was "sometimes known as the Muggeridge Working”, which continues to this day on the Isle of Thanet.

About the Association

Following Grand Lodge's decision in 1986 to remove the traditional penalties from the Obligations a meeting of all English Constitution Lodges known to use the Stability/Muggeridge Ritual was arranged at Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London to consider the changes necessary to the ritual.

At that meeting it was also unanimously agreed to inaugurate a Stability Ritual Association in order to promote better understanding of our shared ritual, to maintain consistency in working practices; and importantly, to promote friendship and harmony between the various Lodges.

The first Annual General Meeting of the Association was held at Freemasons' Hall on 29th September 1987, by which time five committee meetings had already been held and 31 Brethren, representing fourteen lodges had attended.

The Association is indebted to each and every one of them and to all those that have since followed in their footsteps.
